A big thanks to our friends at Killowen Distillery and a last reminder to those among our dear fundraising Supporters who would like to put their names in for this special bottle collaboration, please check your emails and reply with your expression of interest by noon (Irish/U.K. time), this Sunday, the 28th June. There are only 145 of these peculiar créatúrs in the cask and our first priority is making sure we look after as many folks as possible with at least one before opening it up for seconds. For the sake of fairness, allocation is on a first respond first serve basis.
“The History of Éamonn O’Clery” is an ex-peated and P.X. sherry aged single cask incarnation of the bulcán poitín history project between Brendan Carty and Fionnán O’Connor. Based on ‘bulcán’, an archaic Irish oat-heavy distillate and quasi-ancestor to poitín, the original liquid was wild fermented for two weeks from a mash of 50% peated malted barley and 50% peated malted oats, double distilled in Brendan’s direct flame pot stills and hand cut to taste.
We’ve been watching it grow up with our tongues hanging out.
Which leads us, through its history, to its spiritual successor. Named for ‘Stair Éamuinn Uí Chléire,’ a bawdy c.1710 satirical mock-epic by the poet Seán Ó Neachtain in which the personified boozy Bulcán Mac Coirce (Bulcán son of Oats) himself hilariously features, this one-off, cask-strength, non chill filtered bottling is a nod to a time when these beverages were not dusty rediscovered drinks histories but familiar cultural references in Ireland.
