On Thursday, November 20th, we’ll be hosting the eleventh instalment in our ongoing series of Online Hedge School events, looking into the punch, mixed drinks, cordial, and usquebaugh recipes of the Inchiquin O’Brien big house in Clare. Passed between generations of O’Brien women, these incredible early eighteenth-century recipe books include detailed preparations for everything from milk punch to home-distilled spirits to cordials that transcend the spheres of medicine and cuisine, including problematic potions such as ‘hysterical water,’ which we’ll be looking at on the night.
These handwritten relics of Irish gastronomic history are largely unknown to the modern Irish distilling and mixology revivals and it is our absolute thrill to invite National Library of Ireland archivists Nora Thornton and Joanne Carroll to discuss the books and their significance with a panel of some of our favourite folks in both those revivals.
On the night, Nora and Joanne will be joined by distiller Lora Hemy, BAR 1661’s Stefi Fletcher, and L. Mulligan Grocer’s Seaneen Sullivan for a distiller, a bartender, and a chef’s point of view on a remarkable relic of the drinks of long ago. Our old friend Irish Whiskey Society president Alison Kavanagh will be returning MC on the night.
Uniquely among Créatúr Hedge School talks, Fionnán will be stepping aside for this one and we’ll be streaming the evening publicly to help share this truly incredible piece of Irish drinks heritage as far and wide as we possibly can. Registration is now open for the online webinar you’d like to join in you can sign-up here.
We’ll see ye on the night, at 19:00 IST/BST (Dublin/London) / 14:00 EST (New York). Sláinte
