Tuesday 11th June at Arthur’s Pub, Thomas St, Dublin 8
A geologist, a peatland scientist, and the recent author of Peat and Whisky: The Unbreakable Bond, professor Mike Billett knows more than most about a sod of turf. Its past, its chemistry, its flavourful effects on whiskey, and the increasingly prescient questions around the fate of those haunting smokey flavours going forward.

Mike will be joined in a hybrid talk and tasting about the beauty of the black stuff with some of our Créatúr friends including Brendan Carty (Killowen Distillery), Shane McCarthy (Two Stacks Bonders) and a guest from Pearse Lyons Distilery. We’ll enjoy a flight of specially selected peated samples and cask pulls from some of our Créatúr friends, including Killowen, Pearse Lyons, Two Stacks, Baoilleach and Sliabh Liag, along with a guest pour of peated Bunnahabhain Scotch. Some of you may already know about that last one… but you’ll all know at the end of the night…
Specially selected peated samples and cask pulls:
1. Bunnahabhain Fèis Ile 2023 Peated Mòine Bordeaux Finish
2. Pearse Lyons Peated Pot Still Cask Pull
3. Killowen Bulcán Poitín
4. Killowen Bulcán Maturing Whiskey Cask Pull
5. Baoilleach The Cratur Batch One Peated Malt Poitín
6. Two Stacks – Sliabh Liag Maturing Peated Pot Still Cask Pull
Mike Billett’s recent landmark book has been described by Charles MacLean as ‘among the most important books about whisky ever written.’ We agree. So much so in fact that we’ve invited Mike to Ireland to share his book, his wisdom, and his wit, and to receive some turf-kilned Irish hospitality from a few distillers of our own. We’ll be taking him up to Donegal, where he’ll be the keynote speaker at an IWA event at Sliabh Liag Distillery, but before we drive north we’ll be holding our Créatúr In-Person Hedge-School event at Arthur’s Pub in Dublin 8 to allow Mike to chat with native whiskey lovers about the nature of (and in) our peated drams.
Attendees will also be presented with a signed copy of Mike’s book included in the ticket price…
As with all Créatúr Hedge School events, the event has been ticketed to cover costs. Supporters check your email for event information or you can go book on Eventbrite.
