Exclusive Supporters Live Event August 20th at 19:30 IST/BST, 14:30 EST, 11:30 PST
On August 20th, we have the fourth of our ongoing series of Online Hedge School events exclusive to our kind Supporters, investigating the seaborne history of Irish and Scottish whisky smuggling, for a comparative look at illicit distilling across the drink’s old homelands. Fran Leavey will be returning as guest MC, along with our friend, archaeologist Dr. Darroch Bratt, and Brendan Carty of Killowen distillery. Darroch wrote his PhD on illicit distillation in the Highlands and we’re delighted to have him on for a Caledonian perspective as we complete our hedge school deep dive into the history of illicit stills.
On the night, we’ll also be updating our supporters about a very special project and a very special trip, all inspired by the dram-contaminated tides of Ireland and Scotland’s overlapping spirits histories. Distilled by Killowen Distillery from a description in an 1823 Excise report, the cask represents an illicit practice once common in both parts of Ireland and the Hebrides, and now long lost and forgotten in both. It has been maturing for the past year and a half in Irish oak felled on the grounds of Shane’s Castle in Antrim and (after a short trip around the Sea of Moyle) it will spend the second stage of its maturation in a peated Islay cask from Bunnahabhain. Once mature, Killowen Distillery will make these bottles exclusively available to the wonderful Créatúr Supporters who make all this craic possible.
