On Monday, May 25th, we’ll be hosting the next instalment in our ongoing series of Online Hedge School events, looking into the flavours and historical roots of Irish distilling’s love affair with unmalted raw materials. (And no, it wasn’t the Malt Tax.) Greasing our glasses with linseed, saddle oils, and everything spiced, the itch to throw in helpings raw barley is at the very rootstock of Irish distilling’s gastronomic psyche and though we came sadly close to losing it, Irish ‘single pot still’ is having something of a moment now.
On the night, our friend, whiskey writer and liquid antiquarian Dave Broom will be joining as guest MC, along with Fionnán, Powers distiller Eric Ryan, and Echlinville Distillery’s Jarlath Watson, for a look through the books and a chat about some favourite tastes and textures as we stick the lipid-sticky grain beneath the microscope for a history of its tastes in more senses than one. We’ll see ye on the night. Sláinte.
This live online event takes place on Monday, May 25th at 19:00 IST/GMT (Dublin/London), 14:00 EST (New York), 11:00 PST (LA)
